Simple ways to reduce your gas bill.
Check for any draughts that may be entering the house or letting the heat out. Check gaps around doors and window seals. Draughts through doors can be minimized with thick door curtains and draught excluders along the bottom.
Make sure you monitor the thermostat. A good rule is to set it a few degrees lower at night and then increase the temperature in the morning. Most people sleep better in a cooler environment and will not notice the few degrees difference anyway. We do seem to live in the illusion that we should be able to walk around in a t-shirt and shorts all year round. If it gets a bit chilly throw on a jumper or put an extra blanket on the bed.
Lower your hot water thermostat if you are able and use lower settings on your washing machine and dishwasher. This will help save a few quid on your gas bills.
Keep windows and doors closed and only open them when needed. This will stop any draughts from moving around the house and losing heat.
Keep your thermostat set on a timer so that it goes off while you are out during the day and comes back on in the evening when you return.
Have any fireplaces inspected to make sure that you are not losing any heat through the chimney. It can even be worth keeping them blocked off while they are not in use.
It is important to stay warm in the winter when the weather turns colder but keeping your home at a sensible temperature and not having it to hot is better for your overall health as well as your gas bill. It is important to remember that elderly people and children may suffer from the cold more.
Another simple trick is to leave the oven door open as it cools down. This way the kitchen will benefit from the extra heat it is producing, rather than it just getting wasted.
There are many small tips and tricks to saving money on your gas bill, try them for yourself and see if you manage to reduce your monthly bill. It is fun and rewarding for the frugal minded amongst us and definitely worth it when we see that bill lowering.
